The arts for practical change

I came across this ‘Banksy’ style graffiti in Kerala on BBC News. It reminded me of several sections in my just concluded Harvard class on using the entrepreneurial mindset to attack intractable problems in developing societies.

We had a fascinating set of sessions on using the arts to prompt change in behavior that is often needed to get good outcomes.

As a simple and well-known example, look at the Patch Adams website where humor is used to bring relief in hospital settings. One of my Harvard colleagues Doris Sommer has done a lot of work on so called ‘cultural agents,’ in this vein.
